Zygomatic implants are a safe and effective option for atrophic jaws

Do you need dental implants but suffer from a lack of bone volume? Get to know the zygomatic implant and find out what it can do for your smile and well-being.

This type of implant can be the solution for rebuilding the dentition of people with severe bone loss, but who do not wish to or cannot undergo bone grafting treatments. In these cases, the placement of traditional dental implants is not possible, which is why titanium implants fixed in the zygomatic bone are an excellent option.

Find out more about the zygomatic implant and how it can help restore your smile in just one visit to the dental clinic – with the right professional, full-arch rehabilitation can be solved in just 24 hours!

What is a zygomatic implant?

In use since the late 1980s and with a long and consistent track record of success, the zygomatic implant has been applied to the dental rehabilitation of patients with insufficient bone mass.

This happens due to various conditions: increased bone loss with advanced age (patients who have lost their teeth and have had dentures for a long time), severe periodontal disease, after tumors have been removed, etc.

The zygomatic implant is fixed transversely to the cheekbone, also called the zygomatic bone – hence the name. From one to four titanium pins can be used – longer than traditional ones, in order to provide support for full arch dental bridges.

The procedure is safe, especially when performed by surgeons with experience in the technique, and the surgery should preferably be carried out in a hospital environment or, depending on the case, under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.

The patient is usually discharged a few hours after the procedure and, within 48 hours of the surgery, the patient is already rehabilitated with temporary fixed prostheses.

Benefits of using a zygomatic implant

As well as acting as a viable solution for patients with severe bone loss, zygomatic implants have a number of advantages over traditional versions – see the main ones below:

  • Immediate function: as it is a procedure that does not require grafting, patients can see results quickly, with immediate aesthetic and functional improvement. When bone grafting is necessary, patients may have to wait up to 18 months for complete healing to take place before restorations can be made – which is not necessary with a zygomatic implant;
  • Faster recovery: as the overall process is shorter, patients need fewer office visits than is necessary with traditional implant treatments. In addition, they can return to work and their usual routines more quickly, because recovery time is significantly shorter;
  • Minimally invasive: unlike traditional techniques, the zygomatic implant does not require bone grafting – always very invasive and complex, which makes it one of the most innovative and effective techniques.

How do you know if a zygomatic implant is right for you?

The zygomatic implant may be the right option if you have previously been diagnosed with insufficient bone mass for traditional dental implants.

Regardless of the method used, dental implant surgery is a matter that requires special care and the accompaniment of highly trained professionals.
